Psoriasis
Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition which causes rapid multiplication of skin cells. This leads to abnormal thickening of the outer layers of the skin and subsequent scaling. Most researchers now believe psoriasis is related to the immune system, and in fact is often referred to as an "immune-mediated" disorder. It is not contagious, not infectious, and not a result of poor hygiene.
The skin appears raised, reddened, and covered by a white flakey build-up of skin. Skin affected by psoriasis can also be a source of intense itching and burning. Psoriasis can be aggravated by the following:
- Certain infections
- Injury to the skin
- Stress
- Reaction to some medications, eg beta-blockers
- Dryness of the skin
Treatment for Psoriasis
Psoriasis has no known permanent cure, but certain treatments can reduce, or nearly eliminate the symptoms. The following treatments for psoriasis are helpful:
- Phototherapy in the form of artificial ultraviolet light or sunlight
- Topical agents
- Systemic medications
