Eczema
Eczema is a very common skin condition which affects about 20% of the general population. It is also called dermatitis. It causes skin to become red, dry and itchy. Scaling of the skin is common, and in some cases the skin may become swollen or blistered. It can be controlled with medications and exacerbation can be avoided by looking after your skin and avoiding irritants or substances that cause the allergy. There are various types of eczema:
- Contact Eczema For some people certain substances that come in contact with the skin can cause eczema. These can include some soaps, cleansers or other substances commonly handled at work, or while performing household chores. If the aggravating substance can be identified, contact eczema can be avoided.
- Atopic Eczema There is no specific cause of atopic eczema. It tends to run in families and is linked to other conditions such as asthma and hay fever. Atopic eczema commonly affects the face and skin creases of about 15% of infants and young children. The affected areas tend to be very dry and itchy. Scratching is a problem as it can lead to broken skin and possible skin infections.
- Other Eczemas These are less common and include seborrhoeic eczema, nummular eczema, varicose eczema, stasis eczema, varicose eczema and hand eczema.
Treatment for Eczema
There are a number of common treatments for eczema:
- Topical corticosteroid creams decrease skin inflammation.
- Antihistamine tablets can be used to reduce skin irritation and itching.
- Antibiotics are used to treat any skin infections that occur.
- Moisturizers are useful to soften and moisten the skin, helping alleviate dryness.
