Acne
Acne is the medical term used to describe pimples and spots. Although they most commomnly affect the face, they can also be seen on the shoulders, chest, back and buttocks. Acne is an almost universal problem, and affects most teenagers at some stage of their adolescence. However acne can often be improved by following the helpful hints below:
- Do not pick, scratch or squeeze pimples, as you may spread the bacteria and inflamation deeper in to the skin, resulting in possible scarring.
- Keep your skin clean using a mild soap. Gentle washing with a mild soap and warm water will reduce the amount of bacteria and sebum (oily secretions) on your skin.
- Eat a well-balanced diet. There is no medical proof that certain foods cause acne, but a well-balanced, nutritious diet will help ensure you stay healthy and assist your recovery.
- See your doctor. If despite your best efforts, your acne is not improving, or is in fact getting worse, see your doctor as there are a number of effective treatment options available to you.

What is Active UMF Manuka Honey?
All honey contains hydrogen peroxide, which has a mild antibacterial activity. Active UMF manuka honey contains not just this hydrogen peroxide, but also a second antibacterial agent that supports and complements the activity of the hydrogen peroxide.
UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor. Active UMF manuka honey is the only honey that has been rigorously tested for its antibacterial activity. While all honey has some antibacterial properties, active manuka honey contains an additional antibacterial component that is unique to honey produced from leptospermum or manuka trees. It is believed that these two antibacterial components combined have a effect greater than that of each alone. New Zealand active manuka honey is paticularly sought after because of its purity and high quality. To be endorsed by the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, active manuka honey must have a UMF level of no less than ten.
How Can Active Manuka Honey Be Helpful?
Dr Peter Molan from the Honey Research Unit has been testing the antibacterial properties of honey for 18 years. He states: "Active UMF Honey has a unique 'drawing factor' that soaks liquid and nutrients which bacteria feed on, out of a wound it is applied to. It also painlessly lifts off dead tissue, scab or burnt skin and keeps the wound moist, which aids healing."
With the above in mind, active manuka honey is used in many skincare products to assist the healing and repair of dry, cracked, sunburnt, irritated, infected or damaged skin. Used on healthy skin, the unique antibacterial, soothing and moisturising qualities of active manuka honey, helps keep normal skin smooth and supple.
